Thad Jones formed the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra with drummer Mel Lewis in 1965. The band played in its original incarnation for 12 years until Jones moved to Copenhagen and in that time the band (and Jones’) legacy was cemented. Jones’ writing influenced a huge range of later composers including Bob Brookmeyer, Jim McNeely, Bob Mintzer and Maria Schneider and the band maintained a Monday night residency at the Village Vanguard for over 5 decades.
